Unlike many other components, the medium wave bearing is often mounted unprotected on the underbody of the vehicle. This means that dirt, dust and road salt in winter are a constant strain on the seals. In summer, heat and constant vibrations accelerate the ageing process of the rubber. If the component is not taken into account during maintenance work, this can have far-reaching consequences.
Warning signals on the elastomer element
Since the centre bearing also has to absorb forces when stationary, the rubber coating deforms over time. If the ball bearing is no longer exactly centred, replacement is unavoidable. Otherwise, the shaft will no longer operate in its intended position, leading to increased compensatory movements at joints and discs.
Cracks in the damping rubber or detachment from the metal body are also clear indications of advanced wear. If the centring effect of the bearing is weakened, adjacent components such as exhaust systems, pipes or cable harnesses can also be damaged.
A porous bellows on the sliding piece should also be replaced immediately. If dirt particles penetrate the teeth or lubricant is lost, wear increases β usually noticeable through increased vibrations during driving.
Grease leakage indicates damaged seals
In centre bearings, double-sealed β2-RSβ ball bearings are typically used. If grease skid marks are visible, the seal is already defective. Early replacement prevents consequential damage due to grease loss and leads to more reliable operation.
Suspicious noises or sticking points when turning
When the vehicle is jacked up, the drive shaft should be able to move freely by hand. Noticeable detents, grinding or squeaking noises are an urgent warning sign. In such cases, the vehicle must not be used any further, as the ball bearing is about to fail.
Practical repair kits and service offerings
To support workshops with repairs, Welte Cardan-Service offers complete repair kits under the EDS brand. These contain all the components required for professional repairs: roller bearings, elastomer bearings, brackets, dust protection sleeves including fastening parts and high-quality lubricant for the sliding piece. Thanks to these complete solutions, all the necessary materials can be conveniently covered in a single order.
Fast service for irreparable shafts
If a driveshaft is so badly damaged that repair is no longer possible, Welte will deliver a suitable replacement shaft overnight directly to the workshop. An important note from Robert Sanchez, Technical Manager at Welte Cardan Service: Multi-part shaft assemblies are marked for balance reasons. If these marks are not taken into account during assembly, severe vibrations and further damage may occur.
